Obedience - Training and Competition

Successful show dogs, performance dogs, hunting dogs and well-behaved pets have one thing in common: Obedience Training

Why Train Your Dog

Dogs, by nature, are pack animals with a well-defined social order. As you and your family become your dog's pack, your new dog will look to you -- the leader of the pack -- for guidance. Leadership can be established in a firm but friendly manner. Keep in mind that it is unrealistic to expect the dog to abide by the rules of the household without the leader teaching appropriate behavior!

Much like people, every dog is different. Some are hyperactive. Some are laid-back. Some are serious. Others are silly. Some are shy and others have an abundance of confidence. Regardless of these differences, training is necessary for all dogs and beneficial to your entire family.

The Benefits of Obedience Training

Training will:
  • Help correct nuisance behaviors such as jumping on people, digging, barking, and chewing, while providing mental and physical activities for your dog.
  • Deepen the bond between you and your dog, and to increase the enjoyment, companionship and satisfaction of your relationship with your dog.
  • Ensure your dog's safety and happiness.
  • Nurture good canine companionship for the benefit of your family, neighborhood and community.
  • Introduce you and your dog to the fun and exciting world of competing in AKC companion and performance events.

Obedience Training Classes

There are numerous Canine Obedience trainers and training facilities within a reasonable driving distance from most cities in Georgia. By attending Obedience classes with your Cocker, experienced trainers educate you on how to teach your Cocker in a positive and non-intimidating manner so that learning to be a productive and cordial member of the family is fun for your Cocker (and for you). As a member of the Cocker Spaniel Specialty Club of Georgia, you will get to know members who have been active in Obedience training and Obedience competition for years and can help you find a training program.

AKC also provides information about the AKC affiliated clubs or training facilities that offer Obedience classes in Georgia and other states.

Obedience Trials

Training is beneficial and enjoyable. Once you complete training successfully and are on a roll, you should consider participating in AKC Obedience Trials. We explain these events on the next page.
